Near San Giovanni and the tip of the peninsula are
the ruins of the Phoenician, then Carthaginian
and Roman port of Tharros. Started around 800 BC, it was abandoned in 1070
AD in favour of
the more secure, inland town of Oristano. Most, but not all,
of the ruins are Roman.
