The first walk was a nice introduction to an area that has had mining since
pre-Roman times, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries supplied
Europe with much of its lead and zinc. The mines were all closed
in the course of the 20th century. The building was the summer home of
Viscount Brassey, the English president of a main local mining company.
