Near Alghero is the extensive Anghelu Ruiu necropolis, 37 tombs called domus de janas (fairies' or witches' houses).
These are underground here, and elsewhere in cliff faces, cut into rock. They feature very elaborate interconnected
chambers about one metre high. This started around 3300 BC and became more elaborate until it ended around
1500 BC; there are still traces of decorations with human and animal figures. (We were reminded of the huge
number of similar looking but less elaborate tombs in the Pantalica gorge near Siracusa, Sicily.
