There is no way to drive to the south of Chile without
making a long detour over the Andes and into Argentina,
due to the huge South Patagonian
Ice Field. A weekly ferry/supply ship makes a three-day journey from
Puerto Montt (which the photo shows us leaving) south to Puerto Natales, threading
its way between the
thousands of islands of Chile’s Pacific coast. In addition
to freight, it carries 200-odd passengers
